Photo exhibition of Vietnamese ethnic minorities by French artist to open

With 50 mainly black-and-white photos, the exhibition will offer viewers a snap shot of the daily lives and traditional clothes of ethnic minorities in the centre of Vietnam as well as capturing how their traditional culture has commingled with a more modern lifestyle.

At a press conference on November 5, 2008 French photographer, Sebastien Laval, said he has been coming to Vietnam since 1955 and recognised the strange attractiveness of Vietnam’s land and people. He soon began to record images of the daily life and culture of Vietnamese ethnic minorities in late 20th century and early 21st century.

The French photographer coordinated with the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and the Asian Ethnic Association in 2005 to seek images of daily life and portraits of Vietnamese ethnic minorities.

The first photos of Pa Then ethnic minority were introduced in 2006 at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. This year, on the occasion of Festival Hue 2008, Sebastien Laval decided to display his photos of three other ethnic minorities (including Co Tu, Ta Oi and Pa Ko) in central Thua Thien-Hue province.
