Welcome to Vientiane, the capital city of Laos and being one of the quietest capital cities in the world, far away from the bustle and hustle of other Asian capitals. On arrival at Vientiane airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided tour to discover the hidden charms of Vientiane, begins at the serene Wat Sisaket, then continue on to the nearby Wat Phra Keo. Used as a religious museum, Wat Phra Keo displays a collection of both Lao and Khmer works of art. Also nearby, is the Presidential Palace. Although you are not allowed to visit inside, it is a good glimpse in to the town’s colonial past as this building formerly served as the French governor’s palace. Visit the Patuxay monument, Laos’ version of the Arc de Triomphe, where you can climb the stairs to the roof for sweeping panoramic views of the city. Next, your tour takes you to That Luang, the holiest site in Laos. In the evening, enjoy dinner and a show in Phatoke Laodeum. The show focuses on the different ethnic groups in Laos, whilst you enjoy traditional Lao cuisine.
Day 2: Vientiane - flight to Luang Prabang (B)
This morning we transfer to the airport for the short domestic flight to Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang is the best known for its beautiful scenery and high numbers of ancient temples. This former capital has a rich variety of architecture from the old facades of French colonial homes to the glittering temple rooftops. We embark on a tour of this enthralling town visiting Wats Xieng Thong, the Golden City monastery. Dating back to the 16th century this splendid temple is considered to be the finest in Laos. We will also visit the fine temples of Wats Mai, Vixoun, and That Luang. Later in the day we adjourn to the Phousi Holy Hill to enjoy the excellent views of the town and a great sunset.
Day 3: Luang Prabang city tour – Pak Ou Caves (B, L)
Today we take a trip to the Royal Palace Museum. The palace built in 1904 is relatively new by Luang Prabang standards and is a mix of traditional Lao and colonial French design. Afterwards we visit the morning market and the weaving village of Ban Phanom. This will be followed by an excursion by boat on the Mekong River to the Holy caves of Pac Ou. The caves are crammed with the images of Buddha. Along the way we will have a picnic lunch before returning to Luang Prabang.
Day 4: Luang Prabang free day (B)
While in Luang Prabang, you may observe the morning alms giving ceremony where monks walk through the town in single file carrying their alms bowls to allow lay people the opportunity to offer alms and gain merit. Offerings by the people usually comprised of sticky rice, fruit or simple traditional snacks. Known as “binthabat” in Lao, this is a sacred religious ceremony. You may participate and photograph the whole process, however, this must be done in a respectful manner to ensure that there is no disruption to this ancient tradition. Back to the hotel and enjoy your free day to explore this magnificent World Heritage site.
Day 5: Luang Prabang – Xieng Khouang (B)
Following breakfast at hotel, we leave Luang Prabang for Xieng Khouang, an area with relics of Indochina second war between 1964 and 1973. These back roads are a great way to explore the real Laos with few footpints of travelers. The journey is long, approximately 6 hours, but scenic. We can make stops as much as you want for photos of beautiful countryside.
Arrive in Xieng Khouang, you can stretch your legs, or explore the old capital of Muang Khoun Province and nearby villages if time permits.
Day 6: Xieng Khouang – Plain of Jars – Vang Vieng (B)
In the morning, we set out to explore the mysterious Plain of Jars. This is a remarkable archaeological site where hundreds of large stone jars lie scattered over the plateau. It is estimated that the huge jars are some 2,000 years old, but it is still a mystery as to what they were actually used for. We also have time today to explore some nearby Hmong hill tribe villages and learn about their culture and history.
Then we are off on a drive to Vang Vieng , a small tranquil town nestled on a bend of the Nam Song River. Its stunning scenery with a mixture of quiet atmosphere and limestone outcrops remains unspoiled. Depending on the road conditions and the traffic, we should arrive in Vang Vieng by mid or late afternoon. Stretch your legs and free at leisure.
Day 7: Vang Vieng (B)
After breakfast, we start the day with a walk around the bustling central market. Then we take a short bamboo boat trip on the Nam Song River for a little adventure, and we also explore the famous Tham Jang Cave. This Cave was once used by local people as a bunker against Chinese invaders. We also cross the river to the village of Ban Huai Ngai where we explore the local lifestyle of the people.
Rest of the day is free for your own activites.
Day 8: Vang Vieng - Vientiane (B)
